Reading and spelling are basic skills we use every day. Dictating what to do with signs on the road, to choosing what to email in the office, literacy is so important for everyday life. But for many people, reading and spelling are not easy. In this blog post, we will discuss the causes of reading and spelling problems, how they present, and how to overcome them.

Reading Problems
Reading problems can be of varying nature and severity. There are some people who can’t read fluently and some who have trouble understanding what they read. Often these challenges are due to underlying issues that must be addressed for real improvement to occur.
Common Causes
1. Dyslexia: Dyslexia is one of the most well known causes of reading difficulties. This is a language disability in the brain which affects brain processing of language. People with dyslexia may mix up letters, struggle with spelling or find reading difficult.
2. Lack of Exposure: If they don't see reading as an ongoing process when they are young, these children are at risk for difficulties when they move on to school. Like muscle, a skill like reading requires practice, so quality of a lack of qualified practice may result in delayed proficiency.
3. Hearing Impairments: A child can also lose the ability to hear sounds which are important for phonetic decoding and reading.
4. Attention Disorders: Reading tasks involve a lot of concentration and thus have the ability to be impeded by attention issues such as ADHD which affect the ability to attend to reading tasks either inducing comprehension and retention from these tasks.
Recognizing Spelling Problems
Reading difficulties often go together with spelling problems. To spell properly you must understand phonetics, memorize and recognise the pattern. When any of these skills is compromised, the spelling issues occur.
Spelling Difficulties Signs
1. Phonetic Errors: Spelling words wrong in general such as nite instead of night.
2. Letter Reversals: It is especially common in young children and in people with dyslexia. An example is writing b instead of d.
3. Inconsistent Spelling: The same word may be spelled differently in the same piece of writing by different individuals.
4. Over-Reliance on Spell Check: If your child is using a lot of technology to correct spelling they may also have hidden spelling problems.
Challenges and Overcome Strategies.
Fortunately there are ways to help those who are having reading problems and spelling. Here are some approaches that can make a significant difference:
Early Intervention
1. Phonemic Awareness: It’s important to teach children to recognize and manipulate the sounds of spoken language. Games and activities using rhyming and sound matching may be involved.
2. Structured Literacy Programs: Some of these individuals will benefit from programs that teach them in explicit phonics, such as Orton Gillingham.
3. Multisensory Learning: Learning using this approach involves engaging multiple senses to help better memorize it. This works similarly as kinesthetic learners can use sandpaper letters to trace words so as to make studying more tactile.
Tools and Technology
1. Audiobooks: Audiobooks are a great replacement for people who struggle with reading. It allows people to read literature without decoding text.
2. Speech-to-Text Software: These programs serve as a help for those who suffer from spelling by dictating the text instead of writing it out manually.
3. Spelling Apps and Games: Spelling practices can be fun when they’re interactive apps, engaging in practice without turning it into a torture.
Practice and Support Continued
1. Reading Together: Flitting back and forth between pages, trying to figure out which ones you’ve read or haven’t read is a stressful way to gain fluency and comprehension; instead, regular reading sessions with a parent, tutor, or peer can help this happen over time.
2. Positive Reinforcement: Reading and spelling are what we need to work on so we can both encourage and celebrate small victories.
3. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): IEPs, though offensively bureaucratic, exist for students with officially diagnosed learning disabilities, offering specialized support, accommodations.
